Dangerous Escalators?

Dangerous Escalators?

Each year hundreds of people are injured on escalators. Whether you are in a hurry in an airport, or a mall, the dangers of an escalator are easily overlooked. It is important to remember that escalators are especially dangerous for small children and the elderly. Many escalator accidents involve a child's hands or feet. Children are typically too young to realize the dangers of an escalator and usually want to ride an escalators unassisted. As a result, they can inadvertently have their hands or feet trapped when entering or exiting, or have their clothing caught. Parents should remember to hold their child's hand while riding on an escalator and remind them to pay close attention. Do NOT have your child hold onto the railing.

Common Causes of Escalator Accidents
There are several causes of escalator accidents, but many are caused by some common defects:

  • Improper installation, including missing parts and side panels
  • Sudden stops
  • Loose or missing parts
  • Inadequate maintenance
  • Side entrapment involving soft shoes
