Atlanta is One of the Most Dangerous Cities for Drivers

Where does the City of Atlanta rank among the most dangerous cities for drivers?  According to personal finance website NerdWallet.com, Atlanta is seventh overall.  NerdWallet assembled data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, Allstate Insurance, and NeighborhoodScout.  The organization examined risks for drivers in highly-populated cities: car crashes, fatal accidents, vehicle-related crimes (theft, break-ins), and other factors.

The five most dangerous cities for drivers are as follows: 1) Detroit, Michigan, 2) Baton Rouge, Louisiana, 3) Baltimore, Maryland, 4) Springfield, Massachusetts, and 5) San Bernardino, California. Detroit has the unfortunate distinction of high fatal crash rates, high annual insurance costs, and high rates of break-ins and stolen vehicles (as compared to national averages).

Taking a closer look at Atlanta, the seventh most dangerous city, NerdWallet found that Atlanta drivers are involved in car collisions every seven years, with an “accident likelihood” about 44%, relative to the national average.  Of those collisions, there are about 11 fatalities per 100,000 residents.  (Metro Atlanta has about 5.5 million residents, which equates to about 605 fatal crashes).  NerdWallet gave Atlanta a “Least Safe” rating concerning car break-ins and stolen vehicles.

Alternatively, the five safest cities for drivers are: 1) Cary, North Carolina, 2) Boise, Idaho, 3) Fort Collins, Colorado, 4) Naperville, Illinois, and 5) Santa Clarita, California.  Cary has one of the country’s lowest rates of fatal accidents.  According to the NHTSA, the city of 155,227 only reported two fatal collisions in 2014.  Cary also earned a “Most Safe” rating for vehicle theft.

So what do these statistics mean for your insurance rates?  There is a strong correlation between how safe your city is for driving, and how much you should expect to pay for auto insurance.  NerdWallet evaluated the insurance rates for the most populated cities in the U.S.  The company found that the annual rates in the most dangerous cities were about $5,409 per driver, versus $729 for motorists in the safest cities.  Atlanta insurance rates average approximately $1,050.03 per driver.
